I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii."
I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii." It is not overrun with tall modern buildings, and "Tacky Tourist Attractions." It maintains an Old Hawaii Charm. You're not overwhelmed with street performers and aggressive sales people trying to pull you into their cosmetics stores. Yet there are still some homeless people there which is not good. However, I feel very safe in Hilo. There are nearby beautiful gardens and great beaches! Hilo is surrounded by so much natural beauty. There are some great restaurants there as well. I really like all of them, and I make sure to have at least one dinner at Hilo Bay Cafe. I also always make sure to visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center by UH Hilo. It is an excellent place to learn about the history & culture of Hawaii. And their planetarium has amazing presentations!Guest review byGayleUnited States - 10.0
It is close to Volcano National Park.
It is close to Volcano National Park. In the park, there are many scenic hiking trails, interesting natural wonders, and with luck, an eruption. Facilities in the town are minimal, with limited dining and groceries.Guest review byPhilip - 8.0

Location is a beautiful escape, I could stare at the ocean all day. The house is very nice, extremely clean. I really liked my room. I like the clothing optional idea. It’s a drive to grocery store, gas, restaurants, I really enjoyed the Thai restaurant in town, but again a drive away.Guest review byStephenUnited States - 8.0

Keaau is an authentic neighborhood on Hawai'i Island vs. a manicured resort. You will get a feel for what it is like to live in Hawai'i, amid the beautiful nature. It is not super close to swimmable beaches, however there is a waterfront park in the neighborhood where you can see the surf pounding against the lava rocks. There is also a local farmer's market nearby. Hilo town is about 11 miles away and has good shopping and some restaurants. The volcano is about a half hour drive away and definitely worth visiting.Guest review byColleenUnited States - 8.0

The location gave us easy access to both Hilo and Volcano National Park. We landed at Kona airport and had to drive across the island to get to the Hilo side. I wouldn’t recommend that drive at night. This area is less commercial and more laidback than Kona.Guest review byVianUnited States - 8.0

If you are looking for a fancy hotel room, this might not be your place. If you are looking for a Acofortabe place to stay and get a night's sleep so you can go explore what Hawaii has to offer then this is a good option to put a little more money in the exploring budget.Guest review byJust Lucky MCanada - 10.0

The location where we stay was 30 min drive from Hilo and it was really commuting distance. We really think it was very great place to enjoy our real free time instead of rushing to sightseeing many places.Guest review byShinJapan - 10.0

Has the atmosphere of old Hawaii in the downtown, but it also has new and intriguing areas such as the University of Hawaii at Hilo and it's astronomy center. It also has access to Volcanoes National Park, which is an iconic park and sometimes volcanic eruptions to observe. It also has an extremely extensive farmers market with whole range of tropical fruits and vegetables.Guest review byJamesUnited States - 10.0

Two or three days seems the right amount of time for Volcano and it's obvious neighbouring attractions. The town itself seems a bit "tourist challenged" in that there are a very limited number of dining choices. Other than that, there is a weekly Farmers Market on Sunday mornings, a gas station, hardware store, a couple of general stores, a slew of BnBs...and that's about it. All the interest lies in the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and rightly so.Guest review byD. S. McKenzieCanada - 8.0

just far from the beaches and all locations are anyway via Hilo, so it doesn't help you live up on the hills. Hope they build more community/perimeter roads to bypass city traffic. No retail stores, laundromats are far awayGuest review byMARINACanada
