Do you enjoy unique experiences, but aren’t particularly enticed by museums and galleries? Moreover, if you’re an aficionado of American television dramas, this article will guide you on where to go in Las Vegas. CBS Television, responsible for producing The Big Bang Theory, CSI, and The Amazing Race, maintains a research center at the MGM Grand, where they test new or currently broadcasting shows with volunteer audiences.

Influence the Storyline and Format of Your Favorite TV Show

The procedure involves you visiting the research center and watching an episode of a forthcoming TV series, sitcom, or reality show for approximately thirty minutes to an hour. You won’t know what you’ll be viewing ahead of time, adding a level of suspense. You could potentially preview an episode of your beloved show set to air in a few months, or endure a dull farce that will never make it to the screen.

The research method can differ from show to show. During my visit to CBS Television City in September 2013, we viewed the inaugural episode of Crazy Ones featuring Robert Williams. Throughout the screening, we were instructed to adjust a dial based on our reaction to each scene, from 0 (terrible, would immediately change the channel) to 100 (extremely enjoyable).

After the screening, our group of about 12 participants completed an extensive questionnaire on a touchscreen. It necessitated keen observation and proficiency in English. Questions ranged from rating Sydney and Simon’s relationship, to choosing applicable characteristics for Sydney from a list of 20 options, to expressing our likes and dislikes about the show. Apart from questions pertaining to the currently screened series and a few demographic queries, we also rated other series airing on USA television. The survey took approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Experts then assess the survey results and provide feedback to the show’s creators before it airs. If they took my opinion into account, Crazy Ones would have been cancelled immediately. (Update: The series was indeed cancelled after the first season.)

The best part? You can visit the CBS Television City Research Center at no cost. Entrance is free and there’s no hidden catch. Moreover, for participating in the survey, you’ll receive coupons for a complimentary coffee at Starbucks, a voucher for a buy-one-get-one-free hot dog at Nathans (worth the trip just for the humorous ordering process), a 10% discount on series merchandise at the CBS gift shop, and other valuable coupons.
CBS Television City is situated within the MGM Grand Hotel premises near the pool. The MGM Grand Station monorail halts right beside the hotel. Once you enter the building, the center is easy to find. Promoters stationed outside the entrance will readily guide you in.

The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with screenings commencing every half hour.
