The capacity of some U.S. national parks reaches its limit during peak season. Consequently, mandatory entry reservations have been implemented to manage visitor density. In 2026, this requirement applies to the eight national parks listed in this article, even for holders of the America the Beautiful pass. The primary objective is to regulate crowd levels in the most popular destinations.

Which U.S. National Parks Require a Mandatory Entry Reservation?
Why Are Entry Reservations Required for National Parks?
During peak season, many national parks become overcrowded. With visitor numbers rising annually, experiencing America’s landscapes shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds can detract from the visit. By implementing a system that limits daily reservations, the volume of tourists remains manageable.
How Much Does a Park Entry Reservation Cost?
In some instances, the fee is charged per vehicle (covering all passengers), while in others, it is per person. The validity period and the release schedule for reservations also differ among the parks.

Where Can I Make a National Park Entry Reservation?
To book your entry, you must create an account by clicking “Sign Up” in the top right corner of the website. Since demand often exceeds supply, it is highly recommended to register in advance and book the moment reservations are released. A confirmation email from Recreation.gov serves as proof of reservation and must be presented with a passport or ID matching the name on the reservation.

Seasonal Lottery: This lottery opens two months in advance and covers a three-month period. For example, on July 1, 2026, at 8:00 AM MT, the lottery opens for hikes scheduled between September 1 and November 30, 2026. Applicants select their preferred dates and times.
Winners are notified via email on the day permits are issued.
The non-refundable application fee is $6 (covers up to six people). If you are successful in the lottery, an additional fee of $3 per person applies.
Last-Minute Lottery: This opens one day before the desired hike at 12:01 AM MT and closes at 3:00 PM MT. Results are emailed at 4:00 PM MT. The pricing structure mirrors the seasonal lottery.
The permit confirmation from Recreation.gov serves as your official ticket. Ensure you save it to your phone or print a copy to carry during the hike.
